Essential Job Functions
Specimen Collection
  • Perform venipuncture and other routine specimen collections (nasal, oropharyngeal, etc.) across all patient populations, including neonates, pediatrics, adults, and geriatrics
  • Apply universal precautions and use personal protective equipment during all collection activities
  • Maneuver patient weight as needed to position for safe and effective specimen collection
Specimen Processing & Order Management
  • Enter and verify orders in the Lab Information System (LIS) and Hospital Information System (HIS)
  • Perform accessioning, centrifuging, and aliquoting of specimens per established protocols
  • Receive, label, and prepare specimens for testing
  • Generate reports and perform result look-up as requested
Communication & Customer Service
  • Answer phones and route problems to the appropriate area or personnel
  • Provide basic customer service to patients, families, and clinical staff
  • Communicate clearly with team members during high-volume and high-stress periods
Travel & Site Coverage (as applicable)
  • Travel by personal vehicle to off-site collection locations as assigned, including in adverse weather conditions

  • Working ConditionsGeneral clinical and office environment with periods of high stress, fluctuating workloads, and constant interruptions
  • Exposure to human blood and other potentially infectious materials
  • Exposure to hazardous substances, body fluids, and toxic or caustic chemicals and detergents
  • Exposure to moving mechanical parts, including centrifuges
  • Exposure to dust, fumes, and odors
  • Exposure to potential electrical shock and x-ray/electromagnetic energy

  • Potential exposure to physical altercations and verbal abuse
